Unsure Future for Flash Plugin? With the recent $520 million ruling against Microsoft in the case of Eolas v. Microsoft, it appears likely that the software giant will have to make changes to Internet Explorer. Software developers, meanwhile, are wondering:
How will the court case and any changes to IE and other Web browsers affect Websites which use the Flash or Shockwave plugins? Macromedia hosted an ad hoc meeting on US Patent 5,838,906 in San Francisco last month. Among those in attendance were representatives of the W3C, the organization which develops and proposes "specifications, guidelines software and tools to lead the Web to its full potential." The W3C created a public Web plugins discussion list, where interested individuals can discuss the Eolas patent, possible patent workarounds, and the idea of public Web plugins.
